Demonstrated Proficiency

Operations in Iraq and Afghanistan demonstrated an urgent requirement for a low-cost, responsive, and persistent ISR system capable of elevating electronic payloads to an altitude of a few thousand feet above base camps, dispersed forces, convoys, and cleared roadways. These payloads offer advanced warning of incoming personnel or impending threats and are a proven cost-effective force multiplier in lieu of additional ground security. Since 2010 NASC has supported PSS-T system for multiple DOD, Government, and commercial organizations as a stand-alone ISR platform or as a part of ISR systems integrated with unattended ground sensors as well as manned and unmanned airborne collection platforms. NASC Technicians build, acquire, test, validate, and deliver PSS-T with Avionics Sensor Packages, each consisting of one or two EO/IR sensors both of which have narrow and wide area capabilities, one radar sensor hardware, and spare parts.

PSS-T Deployments & Experience

Payload Integration and Testing

NASC Operators identify and propose additional sensor development and integration necessary for PSS-T systems based upon the tactical environment and feedback from Combatant Commanders or Flight Directors. Payload integration is a critical component of successful PSS-T deployment. NASC crew members evaluate the proposed location of each payload to ensure precision load balancing and non-interference with adjacent equipment. NASC crew members and technicians are highly adept at incorporating advanced sensors and other ISR equipment into the PSS-T aerostat platform. We perform extensive laboratory and/or CONUS-based acceptance, operations, flight testing, engineering, and technical support for the Demonstration, Test, and Evaluation of these systems. PSS-T modifications and upgrades are a critically important additional service offered by NASC PSS-T crews.

Experienced and knowledgeable NASC staff members perform field evaluations and on-site repairs to minimize mission loss at remote FOBs with assistance from our extensive vendor supply network. The maintenance actions include evaluating cameras, computers, and fiber optic lines.  Fiber Optic line splicing is conducted in the field as necessary. Troubleshooting is conducted based on manufacturer’s documentation. Circuit boards are replaced as necessary. Replacement parts are stocked based on MTBF data.  Aerostat maintenance includes corrosion control and lubrication.  Preventative maintenance and inspection is conducted based on manufacturers recommendation.

PSS-T operators ensure safety 24/7 for mission operations and maintain battle space superiority and situational awareness. Training conducted by NASC instructors ensures contractors, DoD, or government representatives exceed operational proficiencies to achieve deployed mission objectives. All NASC PSS-T Instructors are previously deployed operators capable of teaching multiple aerostat platforms and sensor payloads. Our instructors also receive vendor certifications on software, hardware, equipment, and payload systems.

PSS-T Training Program is a Six Week Curriculum:

  • Week 1 – Concentrates on all aspects of the ground control station
  • Weeks 2 and 3 – Details operation of camera system and associated software
  • Weeks 4 and 5 – Hands-on operation of the Aerostat including launch and recovery
  • Week 6 – Concept of operation including conducting operational scenarios using live targets
